Nick Swisher: 3 Packages the Atlanta Braves Could Offer the New York Yankees

Kenny DeJohnJun 7, 2018

Nick Swisher had a great game on Saturday against Boston, racking up two clutch hits that helped the Yankees to a comeback victory against the Red Sox.

He hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, and then followed that up with a two-run double in the eighth.

Swisher now has 20 RBI on the young season, good enough for third in the majors.

In the final year of his contract with the Yankees, Swisher will look to capitalize this offseason. The Yankees' level of interest in the soon-to-be free agent is somewhat unknown, but one team known to have interest in the right fielder is the Braves.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reported earlier in the offseason (via MLBTradeRumors.com) that the Braves will make Swisher their top free agent target.

But why should they wait that long?

If the Yankees are willing to let him walk, they'll surely listen to offers.

Package No. 1

1 of 3

We can hope, right?

If the Yankees were somehow able to pry away right-hander Julio Teheran from the Braves, they'd probably move Swisher in a heartbeat.

It would probably mean paying off the rest of Swisher's contract, but it would be worth it if they could acquire the talent of Teheran.

Teheran made his debut last season with Atlanta, pitching in five games (three starts).

He posted a record of 1-1 with an ERA of 5.03. He struck out 10 in 19.2 innings. His minor league numbers are much more promising, as he owns a 30-17 record with an ERA of 2.93. He's struck out 377 in 396 innings.

Should the Braves come calling, look for the Yankees to have interest in the potential ace.

Package No. 2

2 of 3

This potential package includes a couple of prospects you may never have heard of. First, we'll start with who's pictured in the slide.

Left-hander Sean Gilmartin was taken in the 2011 draft by the Braves (first-round pick out of Florida State), but shouldn't need too much time in the minors before he's ready to make the jump to the big leagues.

In his minor league career (2011 and two starts this season), Gilmartin owns a record of 2-4 and an ERA of 3.27.

The other prospect included in the package would be outfielder Adam Milligan.

Milligan, a 24-year-old left fielder, projects as a big-time power bat. He has two knocks against him, which may make him a little easier to acquire.

First off, he strikes out a lot. He's had difficulties keeping his batting average up over the course of his career. Secondly, he's an injury magnet. He's been shelved in three of his four professional seasons because of shoulder surgery and various knee injuries.

When he's healthy, he's one of the Braves' most exciting prospects.

Package No. 3

3 of 3

Now for the most likely package out of the three. Whereas the previous two were pure speculation, this trade has been rumored in the past (from fellow Bleacher Report writer Robert Knapel).

It's also difficult to call this offer a "package," as it would likely be an even one-for-one swap of Swisher and Jair Jurrjens.

The Yankees seemed to be in good shape with pitching early in the spring, and they got even deeper when Andy Pettitte announced his un-retirement.

Now, Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes are pitching horribly, Michael Pineda has suffered a setback and Ivan Nova seems to be the anchor of the staff (via NorthJersey.com)

Jurrjens would provide instant stability to a shaky rotation, and it would also allow the team to DFA or simply reassign a struggling Garcia.

Jurrjens makes just $5.5 million this season, so the Yankees will have to provide Atlanta with some financial help to make the deal go through.

In the end, this is a deal that could greatly benefit both teams.
