Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2012 Results: Nadal's Win vs. Djokovic Is Meaningless
Rafael Nadal won his eighth consecutive Monte Carlo Masters tournament title on Sunday, defeating rival Novak Djokovic in the final, but this victory is meaningless for the Spaniard, since he's supposed to dominate on clay.
Nadal really took it to Djokovic after the first set, and used his great quickness to combat the Serbian's strong serve throughout the match.
Djokovic shouldn't be disappointed about losing to Nadal, because the Spanish star is arguably the best clay-court tennis player ever.
Nadal still has some issues on the hard-court surfaces, which is why he has lost the last two Grand Slam tournaments to Djokovic (2011 U.S. Open and 2012 Australian Open). But on clay, no one is better than Nadal.
The win on clay won't give Nadal any more confidence than he normally has, and it actually would have been a real disappointment for Nadal had he lost to Djokovic on clay.
The Serbian star is stronger and more athletic than Nadal, but he isn't able to move as well on clay. Nadal has a real advantage on clay, which is why he's dominated the French Open for the better part of the last decade.
This victory at Monte Carlo means nothing for Nadal. He's historically done very well at this tournament and is the most comfortable when he's playing on the red clay of France.
Fans shouldn't read too much into this loss for Djokovic because very few people defeat Nadal on clay. Djokovic is still the best player on the planet and will be favored in every Grand Slam match he plays against Nadal.
