UFC 145: What a Rashad Evans Win over Jon Jones Means for the LHW Division

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

In just a few hours, Rashad Evans will attempt to regain the UFC light heavyweight title by defeating the champion, Jon "Bones" Jones.

Rashad is a heavy underdog—+400 to be exact—but if he is able to pull off the upset, it is going to shake up the light heavyweight division immensely.

All the work that Jones had done en route to cleaning out the division goes to waste, and the flood gates open up once again.

If Rashad does beat Jones, he would likely "solve the puzzle" that is Jon Jones, and everybody would know what they have to do to beat him.

Those opponents that Jones had walked through with ease—such as Ryan Bader, Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua—are immediately in the title picture again.

Additionally, Dan Henderson would have the next shot at the light heavyweight belt, and there would be a chance for an eighth man to wear the light heavyweight belt in a matter of six years.

And all the fighters that Jon Jones had beaten would be looking for a second shot at him, so that they could exploit a previously unknown weakness.

As for "Suga," with a win, he would cement himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time. A two-time light heavyweight champion, with a record of 18-1-1, having wins over five champions or former champions. And as a winner of The Ultimate Fighter, Rashad would all but earn himself a spot in the UFC Hall of Fame.

The division as a whole would return to what it was before, where all the top fighters could beat each other on any given night. The belt would change hands frequently, and there would be no utterly dominant champion like Chuck Liddell was, or what Jon Jones looked on his way to becoming.
