Alfonzo Dennard: Nebraska CB Arrested for Alleged Assault on Cop
Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard's draft hopes may have just plummeted after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer in Lincoln early Saturday morning.
Sam McKewon and Sam Womack of the Omaha World-Herald wrote that according to police, Dennard was fighting with another man outside a bar at around 2:15 a.m. When officers tried to intervene, Dennard allegedly pushed and punched one in the face.
According to the World-Herald, Dennard was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest and third-degree assault stemming from the bar fight. Police said it took four officers to get the 22-year-old into custody.
The injured cop refrained from seeking medical treatment after sustaining a minor injury on the left side of his face.
What It Means: Dennard could be gaining a reputation as a prospect with possible character issues. This isn't the first time he's exhibited problems with anger management: In Nebraska's Capital One Bowl loss to South Carolina in January, he was ejected for fighting with Gamecocks wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.
After the game, Dennard told the World Herald:
"I just got frustrated. We, as a team, lost our focus. The game just got out of hand...I take that blame. I'm not that type of person. I think [the NFL teams] know that.
"
What Comes Next: Dennard could see his draft stock fall. Currently, he's projected as a late second- or third-round prospect.
