Kellen Moore: 5 Biggest Strengths and Weaknesses of 2012 NFL Draft Prospect
Kellen Moore is a very productive quarterback out of Boise State University. He was a great college quarterback playing in the Boise State system. Moore seems to be a highly polarizing figure as some think he can play at the NFL level and some don't.
Kellen Moore does some things very well and will look at his five biggest strengths as a quarterback. There are also things that he either doesn't do well or things that physically limit him. We will also look at his five biggest weaknesses as a quarterback.
Strength: Accuracy
1 of 10Kellen Moore is a very accurate quarterback completing 69.8 percent of his passes as a college quarterback. He is a rhythm quarterback, and when he gets rolling, he can really fit the ball into tight spaces in college secondaries. He has the ability to hit his wide receivers in stride with his throws.
Weakness: Size
2 of 10Kellen Moore is a very small quarterback at 5' 11-1/2" and 191 pounds. Having seen him at the Senior Bowl, it is hard to believe that he could be close to that weight. He has a very weak body type and does not look athletic in any area of his body. He is short and this will lead to footballs getting batted down at the line of scrimmage. There is some concern about how his body would hold up against the bigger bodies in the NFL.
Strength: Anticipation
3 of 10Kellen Moore does a great job of anticipating where the football needs to go and putting it there right when it needs to be there. He is a smart quarterback who can read defenses well. He throws the ball down the field fairly well and can place the ball right in a receiver's arms. His football intelligence is on display, as he knows where the ball needs to go and how he needs to get it there.
Weakness: Lack of Arm Strength
4 of 10Moore does not have a particularly strong arm and in the NFL, it will cause him great problems. He does not throw the football with much zip on it, and he will have to rely on his accuracy and timing to make anything happen as a quarterback in the NFL. The ball flutters as when he throws the ball down the field. Moore would be one of the weaker armed quarterbacks playing in the NFL today.
Strength: Touch
5 of 10Kellen Moore throws a football with very nice touch. He uses multiple throwing slots to deliver the football. He can deliver a pass into an area by dropping it in from different heights, and he always seems to lead the receiver to the football. He throws an easily catch-able football that has a lot of loft and drops nicely into his wide receivers arms.
Weakness: Throwing Under Pressure
6 of 10Kellen Moore does not step into his throws when he is facing pressure. He will throw the football off of his back foot and the little arm strength he has is all but mitigated. The ball will sometimes sail on him when he faces pressure, and he will get into trouble in the NFL because of this. Pass defenders will have the opportunity to get a jump on the football because of Moore's desire to throw off of his back foot.
Strength: He Is a Winner
7 of 10Moore was a very successful college quarterback who won 50 games at his time in college to go with three losses. Moore holds the all-time record for wins by a starting quarterback. Those are remarkable numbers for a quarterback, and his ability to win games is not something that should be easily looked over. Moore has taken his team into big games in hostile environments and came out on top.
Weakness: Throwing into a Window
8 of 10Kellen Moore has gotten away with dropping passes into areas where only his receivers can get to the ball. In the NFL he won't have that luxury as the window that a ball needs to go through will get smaller and it will close faster. Moore is going to struggle forcing the ball into certain areas of the field and defenses will make him pay.
Strength: Pocket Awareness
9 of 10Moore has above average pocket awareness, and he can recognize when he needs to get rid of the ball. He can move well within the pocket and steps up into open spaces. He moves pretty well laterally in an effort to keep his feet clean. He understands football and is a very smart quarterback.
Weakness: Mobility
10 of 10Kellen Moore is not a threat to pressure the edge of a defense. He is simply not athletic enough to make plays in this aspect of the game, and when you combine the lack of mobility with the underwhelming arm strength you don't get a warm fuzzy feeling about his chances in the NFL.
