Mayweather vs. Cotto: Money May Would Still Be Best in World with Loss

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Regardless of how you feel about Floyd Mayweather Jr. outside the ring, he's the best boxer in the world.

After Manny Pacquiao's last two fights, it's hard to call him better than Mayweather now. He frankly should have lost via decision against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Mayweather, on the other hand, is still undefeated at 42-0, and he's been dominating for a while now. He soundly beat Marquez, took care of Shane Mosley and, let's be honest, he would have beaten Victor Ortiz anyway, controversial punches or not.

Even with one loss on his record, against a warrior like Miguel Cotto no less, he should still be called the best boxer in the world right now. His counter-punching, speed and defense is tremendous, and nobody has figured him out yet, despite him being 35 years old.

Many experts are basically handing this fight to Mayweather, against a great boxer in Cotto, and that really tells you all you need to know about how dominant and respected a boxer Mayweather is inside the ring.

The general feeling is that Cotto is in a lose-lose situation against Mayweather. If he presses the action, Mayweather will pick him apart with his speed and counter-punching. If he lays back and tries to outbox Mayweather, Mayweather will exert his advantage in pure talent.

The fact of the matter is, when you look at Pacquiao now, you see a vulnerable fighter after his bout against Marquez. When you look at Mayweather, he still doesn't appear vulnerable after all these years. It's hard to even find a chink in the armor.

I don't expect Mayweather to lose this fight, but if he does, I'm guessing a lot of people will make Pacquiao the clear-cut No. 1 in the world. But if Mayweather and Pacquiao were to ever fight, I believe Mayweather would come away victorious.
