2012 NFL Draft Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Top 10 Picks

Matt MoranJun 1, 2018

With next week's NFL draft looming, the football world knows at least one thing for sure: Andrew Luck will be the No. 1 pick by the Indianapolis Colts, first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Surprise, surprise.

So, what else is in store for the rest of the NFL draft's top 10 picks in the first round?

The general consensus is that the Washington Redskins will select quarterback Robert Griffin III with the No. 2 pick, while the Minnesota Vikings will take monster offensive tackle Matt Kalil third overall.

Then, the draft becomes a crap shoot.

The Cleveland Browns own the No. 4 pick, and they face a dilemma that might be older than figuring out if the chicken or the egg came first: Does Cleveland select the best player available or does it fill its most important need?

Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill has shot up the mock draft charts in recent weeks, and the Browns may be tempted to take him with the fourth pick, according to Dennis Manoloff of The Cleveland Plain Dealer

But the Miami Dolphins have also shown interest in Tannehill, and they reportedly would be willing to trade up from the No. 8 slot to the No. 3 pick to get their guy, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Tannehill would take some time to develop no matter which team drafts him, and the Browns could decide to go another direction and select Alabama running back Trent Richardson at the No. 4 slot. According to Steve Wyche of NFL.com, that would be the wisest decision for Mike Holmgren and Cleveland because Richardson is the "best player at the best value" at this point in the draft.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' selection will be based on what Cleveland does ahead of them. If the Browns go with Tannehill, then the Bucs are likely to go with Richardson at No. 5, according to CBSSports.com's Rob Rang's mock draft.

However, if Richardson is off the board, the Bucs could shift their focus to defense by selecting cornerback Morris Claiborne of LSU.

With rumors flying about the possibility of the Bucs trading starting cornerback Aqib Talib, Claiborne may be the most logical pick for Tampa Bay at the No. 5 spot.

The St. Louis Rams are next up at No. 6, and if Tampa passes on Claiborne, don't be surprised to see the Rams snag the top-rated defensive back in the draft.

However, if Claiborne is off the board, the Rams need another offensive weapon in the receiving corps, and Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon could fit the bill.

Russ Lande of Sporting News reports that the Rams' top choice is Richardson, but if he is off the board, St. Louis will select Blackmon.

At No. 7, the Jacksonville Jaguars may be the first team that is focusing solely on defense. If Claiborne falls into their laps, the Jags should take him because they have a glaring need at cornerback.

However, Jacksonville also needs a pass-rusher, and defensive end Quinton Coples of North Carolina continues to be the best fit.

Miami, the Carolina Panthers and the Buffalo Bills round out the top 10. If Cleveland passes on Tannehill at No. 4, chances are strong that he will fall to the Dolphins at No. 8. But will the Bills look to move up ahead of Miami to grab Tannehill?

According to ESPN, the Bills have set up a meeting with Tannehill, even with the team signing current QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to an extension. While it is not likely that the Bills will trade up, anything is possible at the NFL draft.

Carolina is set on offense with Cam Newton at the helm, but the team desperately needs to shore up its defense. Starting on the inside and moving out, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox out of Mississippi State appears to be the best choice.

Only one more week until the madness is sorted out. What moves is your favorite squad making?
