Tennessee Football: What to Look for in the Vols' Spring Game

Barrett SalleeJun 3, 2018

Tennessee wraps up spring practice on Saturday, when they hold the DISH Orange and White Game at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.

It's a crucial year on Rocky Top for Derek Dooley and company, so there's no shortage of intrigue in Tennessee's spring game. What are some things to keep an eye on?

The Vols finished last in the SEC in rushing last year, when they averaged just 90.08 yards per game—116th out of 120 FBS teams.

Marlin Lane returns as Tennessee's leading rusher, but he only rushed for 280 yards and two touchdowns. He's a 6'0", 205-pound big-time recruit out of Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Fla., but so far he's been pushed in practice for that starting role.

Rajion Neal, a converted wide receiver, has been working exclusively at tailback this spring, and has been turning heads in the process. Neal rushed for 100 yards in Tennessee's first scrimmage, and has been adjusting well to his new role in the offense.

Devrin Young, Tennessee's leading kick returner and punt returner from a year ago, is also getting a look this spring. At 5'8" 175, Young isn't the prototypical SEC running back. However, in today's day and age of getting the ball in the hands of playmakers in space, he certainly has a place in the offense.

With so many playmakers at receiver, Tennessee will likely be a pass-happy offense. However, the threat of the run has to be there.

What Does Sal Sunseri's Defense Look Like?

After 27 years in coaching, Sunseri is finally getting a shot as a defensive coordinator at the FBS level. With him comes a 3-4 defense and a spring full of adjustments.

Junior college transfer Darrington Sentimore, who was with Sunseri at Alabama in 2009 and 2010, isn't holding back—he expects Sunseri to lead the Vols to a championship.

Just a little pressure on the new guy.

It will be a work-in-progress for the Vols up until the time toe meets leather at the Georgia Dome on August 31, when they take on N.C. State. Fans will get a glimpse of how things look on Saturday.

Is Tyler Bray Ready To Take It To The Next Level?

Bray has the talent to be a superstar in college football, but injuries to himself, teammates and the lack of a running game have hindered his progress. With Justin Hunter back, Da'Rick Rogers focused and an offensive line that is ultra-talented; Bray is set up to have a stellar junior season.

Spring games don't often provide useful information, but with so much on the line, Tennessee might give a little bit more of a glimpse into what things will look like than other teams in the SEC.
