Mayweather vs. Cotto: Miguel Cotto Victory over Money May Is Best for Boxing

Gabe ZaldivarJun 6, 2018

If you are jaded or cynical for any reason, chances are you are a boxing fan, but it can be remedied with a Miguel Cotto upset over the perfect Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Money May will take his brash persona into the ring and put his perfect record to the test. If we haven't learned what comes next, then shame on us.

There aren't many certainties in boxing, but Mayweather beating a lesser opponent and us continuing to beg to see him match up with Manny Pacquiao are among them.

This isn't to say that Cotto comes in as a castoff boxer who has no business fighting the impeccable Mayweather, because he has every right to believe he can upset the star.

However, every last shred of evidence tells us otherwise. Cotto is an aggressive boxer that will instigate at every turn, and be sent away by the defensive measures of Money May.

Speed will be an issue, and there is no sense in trying to out-point a maestro at the task. Mayweather has seen it all, and has dispatched of them handily.

The problem comes in the form of fair-weather fans that are increasingly wary of watching bouts that have all but been decided.

Mayweather may be perfect, but his tight grip on that legacy harms the sport, and takes the joy out of the build up.

You can take every HBO 24/7 and it will watch the same way, with the underdog vowing to show Mayweather something he hasn't seen before, and guaranteeing that this training session is the one to put him over the top.

When it comes to Mayweather, there are no surprises.

The only fight that would pique that interest remains unlikely to ever happen.

Boxing needs that level of uncertainty, and it would be an amazing turn to see Cotto triumph on May 5th.

The need for Money May to reassert himself in the sport would be immense, following with a couple years worth of fighting the best in the sport.

Yes, this would include a bout with Pacquiao and a possible rematch with Cotto. However, in victory, we get one more boxer that fell to Money May, and some lackluster possibilities on the docket.

There wouldn't be that one fight that would make you pinch pennies for the pay-per-view that would no doubt be a must-see event.
