Arizona State Football: Latest News, Injuries and Updates on the Sun Devils
The Arizona State Sun Devils are continuing to prepare for the 2012 football season this spring, but the team is still in the midst of figuring a few things out.
With a new coach in Todd Graham, you are going to have fresh positional battles, as well as having to deal with depth issues concerning injuries.
While all that is going on, the team can't forget about their future, as they must continue to take a look at what they can grab in terms of recruits this coming year.
The team is starting to get a better idea of things, but they won't truly know what they are dealing with until 2012 recruits arrive, as well as players clear of injuries.
Sun Devils Land First 2013 Recruit
1 of 4Todd Graham is getting his recruiting done early, landing commitments to 2013 as the team continues to figure things out this spring.
According to AZCentral.com's Richard Obert, Graham has landed Nick Brown, a versatile athlete from Florence High School in Florence, Az.
Brown has played many different positions in high school, but as Obert points out, he is best to be used on the defensive side of the ball but may ultimately be used on offense from what he has done as of late. Obert states:
"De La Torre thinks Brown is a better cornerback, but Brown said ASU wants him as a slot back. He moved to quarterback because of an injury to the starter last season and had a big year for the Gophers. He ran for more than 1,880 yards and passed for 1,200 yards. He scored 26 touchdowns.
"
It will remain to be seen how the team will decide to use Brown, but for now it looks like Graham is getting an early nice start on in-state recruiting.
Corey Adams' Battle with Himself
2 of 4After appearing in 13 games this past season, senior defensive tackle Corey Adams is looking to make the most of his senior season.
According to AZCentral.com's Doug Haller, Adams has received praise from head coach Todd Graham, but has been fighting an uphill battle since opening the spring with an injured calf.
""(He's looked) good, really good," ASU coach Todd Graham said. "The biggest thing with all of our linemen is just getting in shape. But he's going to be a really, really good player."
"
The quicker the Sun Devils can get in full health, the sooner things will continue to move into the right direction.
Adams can't fall to yet another injury, otherwise his senior season may not turn out the way he and many are hoping.
Cameron Marshall's Road to Recovery
3 of 4Perhaps one of the most important pieces to any success for the Arizona State Sun Devils relies in senior running back Cameron Marshall, who is continuing to nurse back to health his ankle that he had surgery on this offseason.
Marshall will be taking things in stride, but as AZCentral.com's Doug Haller points out, Marshall has began his participation in practice, just not on the field.
"Last week, senior running back Cameron Marshall, recovering from recent ankle surgery, did various exercises at Muscle Beach. While the sledgehammers rested against a tire, Marshall stretched onto the grass along with three teammates. Lying on his stomach, they all raised their heads and legs at the same time over and over again.
"
Don't let that confuse you. Marshall isn't out in California, but rather, that is what the team refers to one of their practice fields as.
It is definitely important that Marshall continues to move along his road to recovery, but if the Sun Devils learned anything from last year, they want him in full health to make sure he can make an impact each game.
Quarterback Situation
4 of 4Could Michael Eubank surprise the Arizona State Sun Devils by ending up as the starting quarterback for the team this season?
We aren't quite yet at a decision, but as per AZCentral.com's Doug Haller, the redshirt freshman at times showed he could potentially lead this offense.
"I thought Eubank showed promising flashes Saturday. He didn't complete a high percentage, but he made plays. Excluding the situational overtime portion of the scrimmage, the redshirt freshman tossed three touchdowns (two to Gary Chambers, another to Rashad Ross) and had pretty good command of the offense.
"
Haller goes on to say that he envisions the Sun Devils as perhaps using the quarterback as another ball carrier, something that would make the elusive Eubank a promising option in 2012.
Still, it will remain to be seen who will emerge from Graham's options, as both Taylor Kelly and Mike Bercovici have continued to compete. Haller added:
"During the scrimmage (not counting the situational overtime period), Kelly, a sophomore, was efficient. He threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Smith. He also ran well. Forced out of the pocket on one play, Kelly followed tackle Brice Schwab for 11 yards. He also had called runs of 11, eight, and eight yards.
Bercovici, a sophomore, started slowly, but finished strong. (He didn't throw a touchdown pass during the scrimmage, but had three during the overtime portion.) He probably is the best passer of the trio, but he's a distant third running the football.
"
He fumbled late in the scrimmage, a turnover Carr scooped and returned about 40 yards.
While it will be a tough decision, you can never complain about having plenty options. At least the Sun Devils will have a good idea about their depth and should feel good about whoever they need to put in given game circumstances.
