WWE News: David Otunga Getting a Run with the United States Championship?

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

The WWE has played a game of hot potato with the United States Championship over the last several months.

Since December 2011, it’s been held by Dolph Ziggler, Zack Ryder, Jack Swagger and its current holder, Santino Marella

Aside from Ziggler’s reign, most of the US title reigns have been short and rather forgettable, although Santino has already defended the belt three times since winning it.

But Santino might not be able to call himself the United States Champion for much longer because it looks like that belt might be put on John Laurinaitis’ right hand man.

"

David Otunga has been talked about by WWE officials to have a United States title run. The plan was to take the title of off Santino Marella after WrestleMania 28. According to reports, some are surprised Santino still has the title which leaves it unknown if Otunga is still in top consideration

"

Given that David Otunga just lost a US title match on this week’s Raw, I’m not sure if there are still plans to give him a run with the strap.

But I do know one thing: There shouldn’t be.

Although I like Otunga as a character and a mic worker, his in-ring work is absolutely atrocious, and that was never more evident than on Monday’s Raw, when he managed to completely botch two very simple moves, a hip toss and a freakin’ pin for crying out loud.

I get that the WWE is hell-bent on pushing Otunga, and I’m fine with that, as long as he’s being pushed as an on-screen character rather than a wrestler.

There’s no way in hell someone who can hardly even wrestle should get a title run (even if it is the US Championship), and even though Santino is primarily a comedy character, I’d much rather see him hold onto the belt because he can actually wrestle and is incredibly over with the crowd.

If the WWE wants to take the belt off Santino, though, please, please, please don’t put it on Otunga.

Have Santino lose it to a mid-card heel who can put on good matches, needs to be elevated and perhaps can even make the title matter more than it currently does.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-to-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
