Michigan State Football: Wolverines Gets Raise, Where Are Spartans' Pay Bumps?

Michael FelderJun 5, 2018

Last night we got the news that the University of Michigan is elevating Al Borges into the ranks of the elite by raising him up and over the $600,000 mark as Michigan's offensive coordinator.

Both Greg Mattison and Borges are pushing the tops of the coordinator salaries for their respective position as the Wolverines prove their investment in the program with dollars. Looking at the numbers makes you wonder, what exactly is going on an hour or so up the road in East Lansing?

Michigan State, while no BCS Bowl win, is coming off another solid season. The Spartans are 22-5 in the last two seasons and have a four-game win streak over the Wolverines led by Coach Mark Dantonio. The team just closed out a season where they played for a Big Ten title, falling an odd fluke short of being Rose Bowl bound. So, where exactly is the Spartan commitment to their staff where the financials are concerned?

Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi has quickly risen up the charts for people looking to make their next big hire. Texas A&M was on the path and it was reported during the season that the staff would receive raises in February. Well, here in April and still no news as to the pay situation for the current staffers.

Michigan State, in this never-ending battle of posturing for recruits and support, needs to get on it. The Wolverines have tied themselves to the program, they have locked in their coaches and proven a commitment. Sparty needs to do the same, especially if the goal is to extend the streak against the Wolverines.

Between Dan Roushar and the aforementioned Narduzzi, the Spartans have two proven and capable coordinators. If Dantonio's goal is to continue his push for an outright Big Ten title, hanging on to those coaches is a big must for the program.

Michigan has already made their commitment. Ohio State is paying their assistants top dollar as well. If Michigan State really wants to continue their recent string of running with the big boys, they need to pony up for the benefit of the program.
