WWE Storyline of the Week: Brock Lesnar's Video Package on Monday Night Raw

Drake OzJun 7, 2018

Brock Lesnar’s WWE deal features a limited number of live TV appearances, so that means we’re not going to see him in person on Monday Night Raw every week.

It also means that the WWE creative team is going to have to get extremely (no pun intended) creative with what it does with Lesnar when he isn’t even at the arena for Raw.

As you might imagine, that left me skeptical about how they might use Lesnar on last night’s Raw. But I was left absolutely speechless when I finally found out, and it was the good kind of speechless.

Instead of having Lesnar cut a straight-up promo (which he struggles at), the WWE decided to air a full-on video package featuring highlights of Lesnar’s career interspersed with his own comments.

Lesnar established himself as a heel on last week’s episode of Raw, and his fabulous heel persona shined through during the video package.

Some of my favorite lines:

  • “I’m not a superstar. I’m an ass kicker.”
  • “Why did I come back to the WWE? This isn’t a feel-good moment. This isn’t ‘Oh, I missed coming through the curtain. I missed all the fans.’ At the end of the day, I don’t care about anybody but Brock Lesnar.”
  • “The only reason John (Cena) is in the spot that he’s in is because I left.”
  • “I don’t give a crap what’s running through his mind. What’s more important is what’s running down his leg: Piss.”
  • “He’s s***ting his pants is what he’s doing.”
  • “What makes me happy? Beating people up—that makes me happy.”

That was the absolute perfect way to use Lesnar.

The guy has never been and likely will never be a great mic worker, but when you put together a fantastic video package and limit his talking time to, well, smack talking, that’s the best possible scenario for “The Next Big Thing.”

We already just got a major feud, The Rock vs. Cena, that centered almost entirely around promos and talking. We don’t need another one.

Instead, I want to see Lesnar in the role that suits him best, as a heel, doing what he does best: Kicking ass.

Feuds don’t have to be all that complicated. They can just be about one big badass bully looking to beat the crap out of a guy who he thinks he’s better than.

That’s exactly what we’re getting with Lesnar vs. Cena, and I have to applaud the WWE for it.

Four weeks isn’t a ton of time to build up a great feud between two megastars, but I think it’s safe to say that the WWE has turned up the heat on this Lesnar/Cena rivalry incredibly quickly.

We’ve seen some great video packages from the WWE before, but this one might be more important to a feud than anyone I’ve seen in recent memory.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-to-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
