Mayweather vs. Cotto: Fight Is Must-See Despite Floyd Mayweather's Superiority

Brian MaziqueJun 7, 2018

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is heavily favored to defeat Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. I believe he will prove the odds are justified—but I'll still be watching.

Generally, a bout with such a foregone conclusion would be one I may skip or possibly record. Not this time; I'll be front and center as Money dismantles Cotto.

Don't get me wrong—I love both fighters. In fact, they are my two favorite fighters in the sport right now. That is partially why I won't miss it live.

Generally, you don't get an opportunity to watch your favorites in the sport battle it out. This bout presents that opportunity for me.

Even for those that are not fans of Cotto or Mayweather, they can't deny the star power and appeal. Mayweather has as many detractors as he has fans. Cotto is different in that regard; it is hard to find fault with him as a person or fighter.

He isn't brash, loud or flamboyant. Those that hate Mayweather would get great satisfaction from seeing him lose. That is the formula to his pay-per-view success. You will watch whether it be with ill-will or well-wishes.

With that clear contrast in character, it's a wonder that I like both fighters.

I appreciate their differences, and I admire each man's greatness.

I am in awe of Mayweather's amazing skill and boxing IQ. I have tons of respect for Cotto's warrior-like mentality in the ring. He's even more likable because out of the ring, he just seems like a nice guy.

It creates quite a scene amidst the obvious boxing credentials: 11 major world titles and a combined 79-2 record.

As a boxing fan, you must watch this fight. There are simply too many trigger points of interest no matter where you are as a fan of either.

Even if it's just to say you saw it live.

Though I'm not expecting to see something surprisingly special, their presence is enough for me.
