Donald Driver Dancing with the Stars: Packers WR Flabbergasted by Lower Scores

Jessica MarieJun 7, 2018

As it often happens on the gridiron, after a big win one week, a letdown the following week can be inevitable.

Such was the situation that faced Packers wide receiver Donald Driver during the Week 5 edition of Dancing with the Stars. After his spectacular paso doble last week with partner Peta Murgatroyd, he turned in a solid performance of the Argentine tango on Monday but failed to come out at the top of the leaderboard by night's end.

As the judges revealed their scores—a 10, an 8 and a 9, which is no small feat—Driver shouted, "Come on!", showcasing some facetious disappointment. Instead of coming in first this week, he and Murgatroyd fell into third place behind two other duos that both scored 29s.

Prior to the performance, Driver told the cameras that he was hoping for 10s across the board. Alas, you can't catch the game-winning touchdown pass every week.

The judges were nonetheless impressed by Driver's contribution to Latin Week on Monday night. Though his costume wasn't quite as scandalous as it was in Week 4, Driver—clad in a red button-up shirt and a black vest—began the routine seated, playing cards with his partner before they both leaped out of their seats and embarked on a tango that got the fans out of their seats.

The judges' commentary, according to Kendra Meinert of the Green Bay Press-Gazette:

Carrie Ann Inaba: "There's so much technique involved in lifting and doing the ins and outs of those lifts, and you mastered that." (Score: 10)

Len Goodman: "I thought the lifts were spectacular. The rest of it, nearly but not quite." (Score: 8)

Bruno Tonioli: He was a fan of the tango's buildup but felt that the same energy wasn't properly carried through the rest of the routine. (Score: 9)

Despite his failure to finish in first for two weeks straight, Driver should be safe in the competition after impressing the judges and the fans with his tango and his sense of humor.

When host Brooke Burke asked him how being halfway through DWTS compares to being halfway through a football season, Driver told her, "I'm in the second quarter. I'm just finishing that. Now it's time to start the third quarter. Hoping that the fans and everyone keep me here."

If there's anyone in this cast who knows how to avoid peaking too early, it's the Super Bowl champion Driver. His best on this show is yet to come.
