Mayweather vs. Cotto: Money Will Have To Go Distance To Claim Victory

Richard LangfordMay 31, 2018

Miguel Cotto is completely outclassed in this bout, but Floyd Mayweather will not be able to knock him out. This fight will have moments of excitement, and it will go the distance.

Cotto, 31, is not the same dangerous fighter he once was, but he is still tough as nails. At one point, Cotto was 32-0 and on the verge of being considered an elite fighter.

Then his controversial and brutal fight with Antonio Margarito happened. He has not been the same since. Still, through gritty determination he has managed to win his last three fights.

Cotto has just two losses on his record and both came via TKO. The one to Margarito and another to Manny Pacquiao.

We can toss out the first one, as there are strong indications that Margarito's hands were illegally wrapped, which would have allowed him to pack more power on his punch.

The TKO to Pacquiao came in a clean fight, and one that Cotto was dominated in. Still, the TKO did not occur until the 12th round and Manny packs more wallop in his punches than Money.

Mayweather does not have the same brawling style of Pacquiao that it would take to end this fight before a decision.

How the Fight Will Play Out

The excitement of this bout is going to come in bursts. Mayweather is an elite counter-puncher with some of the best defense that boxing has ever seen.

Cotto is going to have a hard time landing punches, and every time he throws one, he will open himself up to big hits.

The savvy Cotto is acutely aware of this. He will go with an economy of punches and Mayweather will not try and force the action.

He won't have to. He will have enough success on his flurries of counter punches that he will quickly gain a nice lead on the scorecards.

This will lead to some exciting moments of flurries and action. It will also lead to Mayweather winning a unanimous decision.
