NFL Draft 2012: Every-Down Running Backs Who Will Go After 1st Round

Wes ODonnellJun 1, 2018

There is only one running back guaranteed to go in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, and that is Alabama's Trent Richardson.

There are a few others who could sneak into the first round, but only Richardson is guaranteed to hear his name called on Day 1.

But that isn't as much a knock on the talent in the class as it is a product of the draft process. Teams aren't investing high picks in running backs anymore because the position has arguably the shortest shelf life of any other, and the stars are found as a free agents just as often as first-round picks.

And that is why these guys who won't hear their names on Day 1 will still go on to be every-down backs in the league.

David Wilson, Virginia Tech

The Hokies tailback has a solid build at 5'10", 215 pounds, and comes with a great all-around skill set.

Blessed with speed and capable hands, Wilson can step in early as a third-down contributor at worst, but will be an every-down back if given the opportunity.

His legs are always churning and he has great elusiveness in the open field.

He just needs the opportunity and he'll make the most of it.

LaMichael James, Oregon

Despite his smaller stature, there is a place for James on Sundays, and it isn't just on third downs.

The Ducks running back was wise to leave the college game when he did, and some team is going to find out that he's tougher and more capable than just being a scat back.

It may not last forever, but James has enough talent to make up for his lack of size. And, in the right offense, he could completely thrive if given the opportunity.

Chris Polk, Washington

There isn't much Polk cannot do, even people don't think him to be an elite prospect.

The Huskies running back checks in at 5'11", 215 pounds, and has deceptive quickness. He can obviously run between the tackles, but can run away from defenders when he hits the open field.

Polk can also contribute out of the backfield, and that is what gives him a chance to succeed on Sundays if given the opportunity.
