2012 NFL Draft: Teams That Should Avoiding Trading Up for No. 4 Overall Pick

Tim KeeneyApr 14, 2012

The Ryan Tannehill craze is officially out of control.

I can get on board with teams drooling all over Andrew Luck, and I even understand the Washington Redskins trading every first-round pick in their foreseeable future for Robert Griffin III.

Those guys are game-changers. You do whatever you can to get them on your team.

But Ryan Tannehill? Not so much.

That's why, as Tannehill has moved from second- or third-round pick to a legitimate top-five pick in the past month, things are officially out of control.

Teams are now apparently willing to trade a bundle of picks in order to move up to No. 4 to take Ryan Tannehill. I'm sure a trade of this magnitude would delight Cleveland Browns fans, as their team currently holds on to pick No. 4, and they aren't necessarily sold on anyone at that spot.

But who are we kidding? Is something good really going to happen to that franchise?

According to CSN Philly, it at least won't be the Eagles who make a move for Cleveland's pick.

"

"A high-level team source dismissed the latest blockbuster trade report involving the Eagles as “just another draft rumor” and said there’s little chance the Eagles will move up to No. 4 in this year’s draft."

"

Good for the Eagles. It would be smart to grab a young backup to eventually replace Michael Vick, but it would not be as smart to give up a large part of your draft to do it.

Here's a look at other teams that will be tempted but need to stay away from Tannehill-sanity.

Miami Dolphins

Many pundits currently have the Dolphins taking Tannehill at No. 8. I'm still not sold on him as a top-10 pick, but it would be much smarter for Miami just to let him "fall" instead of trading up.

Tannehill isn't likely to go to anyone in the No. 5-8 range barring someone else trading up, but the Dolphins need to resist the urge to move to No. 4. They must stay where they are, regardless of how they struck out going for a quarterback in free agency.

St. Louis Rams

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Rams are also interested in trading up for Cleveland's No. 4 pick.

Ugh.

The Rams made it clear they didn't want a quarterback when they traded away the No. 2 pick, but now they are going to trade back up to No. 4 to take Ryan Tannehill?

Yeah, sure, that makes sense.

Sam Bradford has had trouble staying healthy and he took a step back last season, but the Rams need to stick with him as the quarterback of the future.

Get him some weapons in the passing game. Don't jump ship and overpay for Tannehill.
