2012 NFL Draft: Mid-Round Running Backs That Will Surprise at Next Level

Rob GoldbergJun 7, 2018

Trent Richardson and his tremendous talent will be one of the first picks of the 2012 NFL draft, but there are a few more running backs that will be successful professionals.

After the Heisman finalist, Lamar Miller, Chris Polk and David Wilson could all be taken off the board early.

Being a good runner in the NFL usually requires quality blocking, but it also takes speed, vision and an ability to break tackles. The men in this group have these traits.

Doug Martin, Boise State

Martin has been one of the fastest-rising prospects this offseason.

The Boise State running back was usually overshadowed by quarterback Kellen Moore throughout his career, but he was a big reason for the team's success. His absence was also missed during the team's only loss to TCU.

Martin is a strong runner for his size and a quality receiver out of the backfield, making him one of the more complete prospects at the position.

Robert Turbin, Utah State

At 5'10" and 222 lbs., Turbin is one of the bigger running back prospects in this class. He is very strong and can use that to break a number of tackles on the way down the field.

Turbin has solid speed, but does not dance around runners. His ability to hit hole quickly will keep him in the NFL for a number of years.

LaMichael James, Oregon

College football fans know all about James, but draft analysts have moved him down the boards due to a lack of size.

However, he is still one of the fastest players available and that speed translates to the football field.

While he might not get a chance to be an every-down back in the NFL, his ability to score from anywhere will certainly help whichever team selects him.

Isaiah Pead, Cincinnati

The Big East Offensive Player of the Year is a "jack of all trades" as a running back, good at everything but not great at anything.

Pead does not have elite size or strength but is solid for both. He is known as a quality receiver and a very good blocker, but otherwise nothing really stands out.

Still, his all-around skills will allow him to have a productive career with the right fit.
