NBA Rumors: Could the Phoenix Suns Really Sign Eric Gordon?
The New Orleans Hornets didn't want to trade away Chris Paul, but a package including a high first round draft pick, Al-Farouq Aminu and Eric Gordon was simply too much to resist.
Gordon was the jewel of the trade and supposed to be a franchise cornerstone. That was until he was injured in the team's first game of the season and missed the majority of the year.
Gordon recently returned on April 4 and has already had a couple big time games. That means the soon to be restricted free agent has proven he's healthy and ready to be courted this offseason.
The Phoenix Suns have been named as a team eager for his services according to Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated, and Gordon would certainly fit a major need in the desert.
Phoenix certainly will have the cap space to sign Gordon and will be looking to add pieces in an attempt to keep Steve Nash around town.
Gordon's scoring ability and athleticism represents exactly what Phoenix needs most. He would fit in well in the high-tempo system of the Suns, but it will still be very tough to sign him.
His restricted free agency means New Orleans could match any offer, which is more likely now that the team has been purchased.
The signing of Gordon could come down to a couple things: Money and championship contending possibility. Obviously the Suns will have a good amount of money to offer, but championship contending is highly unlikely next season.
One main deterrent in this whole deal could be Suns owner Robert Sarver, who has not been keen to spend in recent years.
I fully expect the Suns to go after Gordon and, in my opinion, could sign him. The mix of good weather, consistent fans and the possibility of playing with Steve Nash is a tempting offer for any player.
