Terrell Owens Comments on Tony Romo Proves Why No NFL Team Should Want Him

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

As if the NFL needed another reason to stay as far away from receiver Terrell Owens as they already have over the last year, the former All-Pro receiver had to open up his mouth.

Again.

Appearing on ESPN Dallas 103.3's "Ben and Skin Show" Thursday, the current Allen Wranglers owner/player didn't have glowing words for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. And once again, it proved why no NFL team should ever want to deal with his tired, old antics again.

"

With that situation, dude, I’ve kind of lost my respect for that situation. Man, that’s a guy I shed tears for, I went to bat for. Then obviously, ultimately I’m not in Dallas anymore and I know he definitely had a hand in that. So, again, it’s one of those things that you kind of just have to bite your tongue and keep moving on, you know what I mean?

"

Maybe the fact that Owens continually threw Romo under the bus—like he's done with almost every NFL quarterback he's dealt with—was a reason why Romo stayed in Dallas and Owens was showed the door.

Over the course of 2008—Owens' last in Dallas—the boisterous receiver lamented Romo for throwing to tight end Jason Witten too often. Owens went as far as marching into the office of offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to express the opinion.

Of course, Owens had a sly way of escaping any blame for that, too.

"

I just happened to be one of those guys that really voiced my opinion. I wasn’t the only one who thought that way. There were games that other guys were open. I wasn’t saying that to get the ball thrown to me a lot more times. I wasn’t saying that to get the ball thrown to me a lot more times. I was all about winning. During the course of games and if you watch the film, there were other guys that were open that didn’t get the ball. That was my thing.

"

And Owens wonders why he's now playing in a glorified pickup football league instead of the NFL, where he could arguably still contribute given his otherworldly conditioning and physical stature.

These latest "woe is me" comments, with little to no regard to what it means to the people around him, are exactly the reason why not a single NFL team bit on him last season. And it's exactly why no NFL team will consider signing him next season, a year in which Owens will turn 40 years old.

Owens will certainly go down as one of the most talented receivers in the history of the game. His numbers—over 1,000 career receptions, almost 16,000 yards and 153 touchdowns—ensure him of that. But his mouth, something he's never been able to control, will be what most remember of him.

This latest act of throwing former teammates under the bus, backing up and running them over again is just another example of why no team should even entertain the thought of bringing that kind of personality into an NFL locker room.

Enjoy Allen, Terrell.
