A Synopsis Of The 2009 Boise State Broncos LOI Party: Chapter 1

Lace BanachekJan 22, 2009

The 2009 commitments for this season's Broncos football team are truly beyond words. However, for a story’s sake?

Winter workouts begin for Coach Petersen’s staff and players this coming Monday. Having said that, last year's redshirt freshmen are ready to step onto the field, strengthening the team in every imaginable way.

Another phenomenal group of high school super studs for Boise State have committed. Most of these will red shirt. A couple of these have been asked to be ready to compete for true freshman position(s).

There most likely will be a few more commitments than the 19 players looked at come Feb 4th. However, this group will continue the talk of a BSU national championship whether Moore and Company accomplish that goal or not.

I will give this group, and whoever may have joined them, a look in a two-part story and then one last look following the LOI party.

The Bay Area Connection

Southwick and Leno played one another throughout their careers and both know one another quite well. Leno said of Southwick, “He is much better than people know.”

Winston Venable, on the other hand, is well known in Arizona, where he played junior college ball. However, his home in San Rafael, California, is 18 kilometers from the Golden Gate Bridge, which puts Venable in the Bay Area, too.

QB Joe Southwick

Southwick is championship quality. He is extremely knowledgeable of the game and does what it takes to win. Grade A+

OL Charles Leno

Leno is 6'5", 265 pounds of a monster blocking tackle. Look for the addition of larger lineman to compliment Leno and Broyles, who will be mentioned later. Grade A+

S Winston Venable

Venable was highly thought of at his Arizona junior college. Venable brings experience to the safety position and may very well play right away.

Having Venable ready allows starters Jeron Johnson and George Iloka to go full speed on every play. The defensive backfield for BSU could be twice as good as it was last year. Grade A

The Best Of The Rest Of California

LB John Michael Davis

Davis is a fantastic linebacker. The four-star recruit's main attributes are his speed and strength. Davis' power style may cause fans immediately to not miss Kyle Gingg too much. Look for this guy to put on a show. Grade A+

TE Trevor Peterson

Peterson is a true Bronco. He gave up an Ivy League offer to play for BSU. He belongs on the blue. This TE has great hands and is very strong. He does what is needed and can do just about anything asked.

Peterson will make an immediate impact when completing his red shirt year. With Peterson joining Tommy Gallarda, Kyle Efaw, and Josh Hill, BSU will have the best talent at TE they have ever had. Grade A+

Alexander is an unknown quality, but his bloodline is not. It is often said that genes sometime skip a generation. If that were the case here, Minnesota Viking multi-talented DE Carl Eller may have passed down his phenomenal genes to the next generation. Carl Eller was not just another pro football star, he was a 15-year veteran of the game and helped take his team to four Super Bowls. Grade A-

The Arizona Connection

Ebo Makinde

Makinde most likely will red shirt. A year of weights, film, and watching a very good defensive backfield, along with Makinde's God-given attributes. will make this one a sound player. Grade A-

DE Justin Jungblut

Jungblut will be a star at this level and most likely the next. He has always been a force to be reckoned with. Look for Jungblut to force his opponents into many mistakes and his presence alone will make everyone else that much better. Grade A+

DE Kharyee Marshal

Marshal is a solid player, and a year in review will help him all the more. Look for Marshal to contribute in a big way. Grade A-

The other half of this group will be further discussed in the next chapter. This group of players is exceptional and each and every one has the ability to set individual achievements besting those of former BSU greats.
