Liverpool Target Mexican Winger Hector Herrera to Strengthen Midfield

Christopher HallJun 7, 2018

Dirk Kuyt is reportedly on his way out at Liverpool, and Jordan Henderson has not lived up to expectations since arriving at Anfield.

As a result, the Reds are looking to Mexico for an answer to their problems on the outside.

According to James McManus at Goal.com, their newest target is 21-year-old Pachuca winger Hector Herrera.

Herrera has made 23 appearances for Pachuca in Mexico's Primera Division since breaking into the first team in 2011.

The player saw his stock rise following his performances during Mexico's run to a first-place finish in CONCACAF Olympic qualifying last month.

After sitting out the team's opening game against Panama, Herrera took the field for the rest of Mexico's matches, including the 2-1 win over Honduras in the final.

Pachuca's executive director Andres Fassi told ESPN Deportes Liverpool are interested in the player, but did not indicate any offers had yet been made.

Fassi went on to say Pachuca are not interested in temporary arrangements that would see Herrera test the European waters.

"If [Herrera leaves], it will be thanks to a sale," Fassi said. "We will not loan him out or send him for a trial."

So if Liverpool are interested, Kenny Dalglish will have to once more pry open the well-worn purse strings recently left unmanned by director of football Damien Comolli's departure.

But if he does so, Fassi is happy to back his player for success in England. The Pachuca executive says Herrera is good enough to become one of the best players in the EPL within "two or three seasons."
