Who Will Be This Year's David Tyree?

Walker DanielsJan 22, 2009

We all remember 2008 Super Bowl betting in which the New York Giants became the proverbial Joey Greco and ruined the New England Patriots date with destiny.

Little known, little used wide receiver David Tyree had a game-altering grab and although we haven't heard from him since, a lot of people seem to be wondering who's going to be the David Tyree for the Super Bowl XLIII.

It has to be someone obscure, someone who isn't a regular contributor and someone who even the hardcore football fans would be surprised by.

My pick: Larry Fitzgerald.

Look for him to be the David Tyree of Super Bowl XLIII and throw a wrench into the Vegas Super Bowl odds.

Just kidding.

In all seriousness, it can't be Fitzgerald. Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston both topped 1000 yards receiving, so they're out. Can't be Edgerrin James or Tim Hightower or even J.J. Arrington, as all three are used in rotation in the Cardinals backfield.

Leonard Pope has potential, but he is still the starting tight end for the Cardinals. Jerheme Urban...we're getting warm, but he still caught 34 passes for 448 yards.

From the Cardinals, it is down to Early Doucet and Sean Morey.

On the other side of the equation, the Steelers are a public team so their options are limited.

You can cut Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Heath Miller out of the conversation right away. Limas Sweed had potential, but he stepped into the spotlight after an ugly drop last week. Matt Spaeth?

I'll say Dennis Dixon, if he's even active. The Steelers might try a trick play or two and Dixon is athletic enough of a wild card to make a play.

There's plenty of Super Bowl XLIII props up right now—unfortunately there are no Vegas Super Bowl odds that allow us to bet on "who will be the next David Tyree?"
