Fantasy Basketball Comparison: Von Wafer vs. Mike Miller

Ryan LesterJan 22, 2009

In the past month, the Houston Rockets' Von Wafer has been a scoring machine. He’s averaging 16.9 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.0 three-pointers per game. He’s even shooting at a healthy clip at 51.9 percent.

Granted, he could be better at the line (71.4 percent), but neither that nor his 0.9 turnovers per game will really hinder a fantasy team.

It’s amazing to take a look at his numbers pre-New Year’s Day and post-New Year’s Day. It’s like he flipped a switch. I guess we know what his New Year’s Resolution was.

Yet despite his surge, he’s owned in just 20 percent of Yahoo and 4.9 percent of ESPN leagues.

Meanwhile, Mike Miller of the Minnesota Timberwolves is owned in 67 percent of Yahoo and 80.8 percent of ESPN leagues. Miller not only has struggled with an ankle injury but is yielding minutes to Rodney Carney.

In the last month, Miller is averaging 5.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. He’s hardly earning his reputation as a sharp shooter with 0.6 three-pointers per game, a 33.3 percent field goal percentage, and a 52.9 percent free throw percentage.

Heck, Shaq is shooting 65.6 percent from the line over the past month.

Miller's 1.1 turnovers per game aren’t terrible, but they are still higher than Wafer’s. Perhaps it's time to consider Wafer for a fantasy spot. Some food for thought. Pun intended.
