Super Bowl Coaching Matchup Will Be a Hot Topic This Year

Nick BarillaJan 22, 2009

Mike Tomlin and Ken Whisenhunt will have on lot on their minds as they prepare themselves for Superbowl XL III. Primarily because of the fact that they both are one win away from living every NFL coach's dream, winning the Super Bowl.

Even though Tomlin's Steelers (14-4) are seven-point favorites in Vegas, if anyone has a chance at stopping the Steelers, it has to be Ken Whisenhunt, who coached Pittsburgh's offense from 2004-2006 helping them win Super Bowl XL and is now the Arizona Cardinals head coach.

When Whisenhunt left Pittsburgh to become Arizona's head coach, he brought along with him some of it's coaching staff, along with Russ Grimm who served as Bill Cowher's assistant coach during some of his tenure with the Steelers.

Along the way, Whisenhunt signed four former Steelers, all were on the 2005 Super Bowl team, to help bring a taste of Pittsburgh along with him.

Ken has led his Cardinals (12-7) through adversity all season. The Patriots, who lost Super Bowl XLII, had 11 wins this season and missed the playoffs for the fist time in almost a decade. The Cardinals won the NFC West division with only nine wins and many NFL fans believed they hadn't deserved to make the playoffs over the Patriots.

In the three playoff games that Arizona had to play in order for them to get to Tampa Bay, sight of Super Bowl XLIII, they showed tremendous improvement in every department that showed critics why they deserved a spot for a chance to win a title; the franchise's first ever championship.

Tomlin and the Steelers have a little bit of a different story to tell; they have showed execution in their playing style all year long; even with the job of having the NFL's toughest schedule. Mike Tomlin is a man who is humbled by a Steelers win but never perfectly content with one.

In the postgame trophy presentation on the night of the AFC Championship game Tomlin explained that defeating the ravens was a big accomplishment but Arizona was in the way of the ultimate goal.

In some views, this years Super Bowl is an uneven clash between David and Goliath. But by next Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, all the hype will end and only one team will be remembered as the Super Bowl XLIII champion.
