Mayweather vs Cotto: A Win by Cotto Could Lead to Pacquiao vs Mayweather in Nov.

Leo ReyesJun 4, 2018

An upset win by Miguel Cotto over unbeaten Floyd Mayweather on May 5 could trigger immediate resumption of talks for the much-awaited Pacquiao vs. Mayweather superfight in November.

Unless an automatic and immediate rematch is provided for in their respective contracts for their upcoming fights, the prospect of a November date between these two great champions is becoming a real possibility.

In a scenario where Mayweather ends up losing to Cotto, he may be more accommodating with Pacquiao's demands come negotiation time, as a loss would undoubtedly diminish Money's bargaining power.

This time Mayweather would probably settle for the 50-50 purse split as Pacquiao had originally demanded, and it would definitely suit Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum, who has been turned off by Mayweather's recent outrageous demands.

As far as Mayweather is concerned, a fight with Pacquiao in November is not going to happen because his promoter Bob Arum is standing in the way of the super fight.

"No, I don't think it's going to happen," Mayweather said of a Pacquiao fight. "It's because of [Pacquiao promoter] Bob Arum. It's not my fault."

But Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, and Roger Mayweather, who serves as Floyd's trainer, have been speculating that the two will finally collide in November.

"There's nowhere else for them to go," Roach has said.

Mayweather's uncle, Roger, said the reason his preference in promoting the fight in November is because Floyd looks incredibly sharp in training and even predicted Pacquiao won't last five rounds should they collide in November

"This is the best I've seen him since the Diego Corrales fight," Roger Mayweather said. "He hasn't been laid off at all, he's come back tight, sharper."

In the event that Mayweather wins over Cotto on May 5 (as most fight fans predict), it follows that he will again continue with his outrageous demands on account of his unblemished record—a situation that could again stall future fight negotiations.

But a win by Cotto could trigger the resumption of the stalled talks, provided Arum and Top Rank are convinced Mayweather would indeed agree to the 50-50 split in revenues.
