Andrew Luck vs. Robert Griffin III: Which QB Is Better Fit in Washington?

Ryan PhillipsApr 11, 2012

The Washington Redskins own the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL draft, and they will surely take a quarterback with that selection. According to ESPN, the team has met with both Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III this week, and while both players are outstanding talents, the Stanford signal-caller would be the ideal player for Washington's offense.

Head coach Mike Shanahan's offensive scheme is based on quick reads and accuracy from the quarterback. It is a West Coast-type system, similar to the one Luck ran during his time at Stanford. It would be a natural transition for the Texas native.

Accuracy is key in a quick-read offense, and during the past two years at Stanford, Luck completed a phenomenal 71 percent of his passes. Having watched hours of Luck on tape, he is as polished a prospect I've ever scouted under center. His reads, timing and accuracy would all be perfect for Shanahan's system.

The cerebral element of the game is where Luck goes from great prospect to once-in-a-decade quarterback. He just understands the game of football and makes near-perfect reads. As proof of that, in 1,064 collegiate attempts over three years, Luck threw just 22 interceptions. That's remarkable.

Unfortunately for the Redskins, it is almost certain that Luck won't be there when they are on the clock on April 26. Griffin will be the guy they'll have to take.

But fret not, Redskins fans, Griffin isn't exactly a slouch. Though I'm not sure he perfectly fits into what Shanahan likes to do with his quarterbacks, the kid is a phenomenal talent who should develop into an excellent NFL quarterback.

Griffin's athleticism and improved arm strength and accuracy (he completed 72.4 percent of his passes in 2011) should help him survive what could be a rough rookie season in the NFL. After that, he should be able to mature into an effective offensive weapon.

So while Luck is the better fit for Washington's offense, Griffin should do just fine under Shanahan's tutelage.
