Boston Marathon 2012: North End Resident Runs to Raise Awareness for the Blind

Ryan RudnanskyApr 10, 2012

The Boston Marathon has become about more than simply running the fastest time. North End resident Lisa Wolk will run her fifth marathon on Monday to raise awareness and funds for the blind.

In conjunction with Team With A Vision, Wolk will run to raise funds for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MAB).

TWAV joins both sighted and blind athletes in the Boston Marathon’s Visually Impaired Division, proving that vision loss doesn't mean you have to lead a restricted life.

MAB CEO Barbara Salisbury said, via NorthEndWaterfront.com:

"

“These visually impaired athletes show that losing your sight doesn’t have to keep you from leading full and meaningful lives."

"

TWAC, which reportedly raised nearly $40,000 this year to support MAB, shows that there is more to life than running the fastest time and breaking records. Each participant in the Boston Marathon has a life story, and some run for a great cause.

It's important to remember that there are far greater things going on around us and that some are less fortunate. It's also important to recognize the strides and accomplishments people around us make. Some of these accomplishments go unnoticed. In the end, it's not about where you place, but the distance you have traveled in your own personal life.

TWAV and MAB show us that anything's possible and whatever limitations you have, they can be overcome. We have each other to lean on throughout life's struggles and fighting for each other's well-being is really what it's all about.

So when records are being broken on the course on Monday, remember the Boston Marathon’s Visually Impaired Division is defying the odds, as well.
