2012 NFL Draft: 10 Players Teams Must Stay Away From

Nolan AhernApr 11, 2012

The NFL draft will take place on April 26th, and this may be one of the most talented incoming classes ever.

The depth of talent available in this year’s draft will hurt players who were standouts in college, but may lack certain skills or tools to succeed at the next level.

Here is a list of 10 such players that teams should be wary of drafting.

Jordan Jefferson

1 of 10

School: LSU

Age: 21

Position: Quarterback

Vitals: 6’5”, 223 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 61 of 100 for 737 yards, 6 TD, 2 INT

Concerns: Despite his size and athleticism, Jefferson has never been a consistent producer and lacks experience in the pocket.

Kendall Wright

2 of 10

School: Baylor

Age: 22

Position: Wide Receiver

Vitals: 5’10”, 190 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 108 catches for 1,663 yards, 14 TD

Concerns: Wright could be a solid receiver, but he should not be drafted as high as he will be. He only ran a 4.61 40-yard dash at the combine, which is not good enough for a small receiver, and he benefited from RGIII’s accuracy. Also, Wright is not a blocker or a factor in the running game.

Kellen Moore

3 of 10

School: Boise State

Age: 22

Position: Quarterback

Vitals: 6’1”, 191 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 326 of 439 for 3,800 yards, 43 TD, 9 INT

Concerns: 6’1” is generous, and Moore is probably just under 6'0". He throws accurately, but not with any velocity. He'll struggle to ever stretch the field with a deep ball or fit the ball into a tight spot.

Brandon Weeden

4 of 10

School: Oklahoma State

Age: 28

Position: Quarterback

Vitals: 6’4”, 218 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 408 of 564 for 4,727 yards, 37 TD, 13 INT

Concerns: He is already 28 years old, making his shelf life as an NFL quarterback a concern. He has a strong arm and throws accurately, but he threw to a lot of open receivers at Oklahoma State and benefited from their quick-read offense. He is not a great athlete, either.

Case Keenum

5 of 10

School: Houston

Age: 24

Position: Quarterback

Vitals: 6’2”, 210 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 428 of 603 for 5,631 yards, 48 TD, 5 INT

Concerns: Keenum is undersized for a quarterback and lacks the arm strength and velocity to succeed in the NFL. His production was absurd, but somewhat of an anomaly given his system and competition.

LaMichael James

6 of 10

School: Oregon

Age: 22

Position: Running back

Vitals: 5’8”, 194 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 247 carries for 1,805 yards, 18 TD, 17 catches for 210 yards, 1 TD

Concerns: Again, James has value, just not the value that he is perceived to have. He ran an excellent 40-yard dash of 4.45 seconds at the combine, but his size is a real concern. He has value as a third-down back, but he is not big enough to sustain an NFL career as a No. 1 back.

Alshon Jeffery

7 of 10

School: South Carolina

Age: 22

Position: Wide receiver

Vitals: 6’3”, 216 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 49 catches for 762 yards, 8 TD

Concerns: Jeffery has value as a jump-ball receiver, but does not have the speed to be a strong receiver in the NFL. He also struggles running routes because he lacks fluidity and quickness.

Ryan Broyles

8 of 10

School: Oklahoma

Age: 24

Position: Wide receiver

Vitals: 5’10”, 188 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 83 catches for 1,157 yards, 10 TD

Concerns: Though he was very productive at Oklahoma, Broyles has not been able to participate in the offseason due to a season-ending torn ACL. He already has average speed for an NFL wideout, so the ACL injury can only hurt him.

Darron Thomas

9 of 10

School: Oregon

Age: 21

Position: Quarterback

Vitals: 6’3”, 220 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 211 of 339 for 2,761 yards, 33 TD, 7 INT

Concerns: The Oregon standout does not have the throwing motion to accurately deliver balls in the NFL. He threw a lot of dump-offs and short passes at Oregon, which may have masked the problems with his arm.

Chris Rainey

10 of 10

School: Florida

Age: 22

Position: Running back

Vitals: 5’8”, 180 pounds

2011-2012 Statistics: 171 carries for 861 yards, 2 TD, 31 catches for 381 yards, 2 TD

Concerns: Rainey does not possess the size at running back that is necessary to be successful in the NFL. His running style is similar to LaMichael James’, but the former is less explosive.
