Terrance Knighton Injury: 5 Questions the Jaguars Must Answer
Even when you are having fun, you have to be careful.
Terrance Knighton was injured in a night club incident, raising questions about his health, whether he will play and what happens if he cannot answer the bell when the season starts.
All of this also casts a cloud over the draft and whether there will be enough "healthy" bodies on the defensive line when the team goes to training camp.
Knighton is arguably the Jaguars' best defensive lineman, and he and Tyson Alualu represent the future of the team's defense.
But now, the Jaguars must refocus, re-evaluate and decide how to move forward.
And along the way, they need to also answer these five questions.
Can He Play This Season?
1 of 5Right now, the team does not know exactly what happened in the incident.
A report in the Florida Times-Union offers little information other than he had surgery on his eye. When more information is gathered and they can assess his injury after talking with doctors, then they will know when and if he can play this season.
Knighton was working in the offseason to get into playing shape. His weight has been an issue at times for this team, but Knighton was well on his way to making weight by the time the team went to training camp.
Does This Mean They Find a Defensive Tackle in Free Agency?
2 of 5There are few defensive tackles left in free agency, but does this mean the team trades for one or even looks to add another body in the free agency pool.
Rocky Bernard, Tyler Brayton, Tim Bulman and Shaun Rogers could all get a long look.
Tyson Alualu Had Knee Surgery. How Does That Affect Him?
3 of 5Alualu and Knighton fed off each other and helped the Jaguars rank sixth overall in defense last season.
What happens now?
Alualu is still on crutches but expects to be ready at the start of camp. Can he shoulder the load if Knighton cannot go?
Alualu was the 10th player selected overall in 2010. He has played well for the last two seasons but has not put a superior season together. The surgery in the offseason to repair his knees should help
Can Aaron Kampman and Jeremy Mincey Play Above Themselves?
4 of 5One just re-signed with the team. The other is rehabbing again.
Both are needed to make the pass rush better.
Kampman maybe more than Mincey needs to prove himself worthy again. Mincey has been the team leader in sacks each of the last two seasons.
Does This Change the Complexity of the Draft?
5 of 5Let's hope not.
Wide receiver and pass rusher still remain the team's top priorities. There is also a need in the secondary and on the offensive line.
Defensive tackle was one place the team felt really comfortable with.
Look for the team to evaluate the situation and see if they can get by with who they have. CJ Moseley and D'Anthony Smith will also be in the tackle rotation.
If they go to the draft and take a tackle, look for someone in the second round like Brandon Thompson of Clemson to get a long look.
