NFL Draft 2012: Underrated Second-Day Selections Who'll Prove to be Steals

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

The NFL draft is always a crap shoot, and the 2012 NFL draft is no different. There are some bargains to be found on the second day, as some "sure things" tank while underrated players fall into the later rounds only to become elite players at the next level.

Here are three such players.

David Wilson, Running Back, Virginia Tech

One of the universal truths about the NFL draft is that you can always find stellar running backs after the first round. Heck, some of the best have been undrafted.

Wilson is fast. His 40-yard dash time of 4.49 at the combine was much slower than many scouts anticipated, which should tell you how fast he is on tape. NFLDraftBible.com says Wilson has run a 4.29 time in the past.

Like I said, he's fast.

Wilson does more than just run fast, though. He is extremely agile, able to make cuts on a dime. Wilson is also a decent pass-catcher out of the backfield, though he wasn't utilized much in that role at Virginia Tech.

Wilson has the skill set to become one of the best running backs in the league given good health and the right scheme.

Prediction: Wilson will be drafted late in the second round.

Kevin Zeitler, Offensive Guard, Wisconsin

Zeitler is an elite guard prospect, but with a guy like David DeCastro stealing all the limelight he's going largely unnoticed by most casual fans.

I guarantee NFL scouts know who he is, and he is going to make one lucky team happy in 2012.

Zeitler helped pave the way for Montee Ball's phenomenal, Heisman-nominated season. He is a phenomenal run-blocker that will excel in a zone scheme but who can play in any scheme due to his diversity.

He has ideal size—6'4" and 314 pounds—to handle the powerful defensive tackles the NFL is pumping out these days. He is strong at the point of attack and knows how to keep his feet to keep leverage in most situations.

Zeitler has a nasty disposition on the field, too—something every offensive line coach loves.

He should be a plug-and-play starter from day one, and he will be good for a long time barring injury.

Prediction: Zeitler will be selected in the middle to late second round.

Lavonte David, Outside Linebacker, Nebraska

David is an undersized linebacker. He is only 6'1" and weighs in at a mere 225 pounds. Sounds more like a big safety than an outside linebacker, right?

Don't let his size fool you.

David is a player that worked his way up to Division I after playing in the JUCO ranks for two years. He's been fighting the label that he's too small his entire life.

David is explosive when he sees a play, making instant reactions and then flying to the ball faster than you can blink. He hits like a Mack truck, too.

The best part of David's game is that he sees things before they happen. He has natural instincts for the game of football that can't be taught or learned.

Prediction: David will be a steal in the third round.
