Stop The Carousel I Want To Get Off. At Least Until Next Season!

For about the last two and a half months now. There have been numerous rumors, wishes, and lies spread about Notre Dame replacing Charlie Weis as it's head football coach.

For the time being, they are wrong! By the end of the 2009 season. Who knows? I myself, called for his head at the end of the Boston College game. Then came Navy, Syracuse, and Southern Cal.

By that time I thought he was definitely done in South Bend! But for whatever reasons? The powers that be in South Bend decided that he should be given a one year reprieve. As someone on the outside looking in, I coudn`t fathom their decision.

But it is their call. I hope they made the right choice! But only time will tell. If he can rally the troops next season to play like they did in Hawaii, he will have no worries. But if the team doesn't respond to his new strategies, and assistant coaching changes, his time at Notre Dame will be over.

Charlie in all fairness to him is a very good recruiter! And that was one of the big question marks against him while he was being hired. Can he recruit? Yes he can.

And he was a great offensive coordinator in the PRO`S. But can he be a great college head coach to 18-22 year olds? I have my doubts. But I hope I am wrong, he needs to rein in his ego and arrogance, and accept that he is still learning to be a head coach.

He also needs to have confidence in his assistants to do their jobs. And accept their views, ideas, and experiences. Only dictators want yes men around them. And we all know how the majority of them fail!

The talent level at Notre Dame is now the best its been since Holtz left. Believe it or not? And more is on the way,with national signing day on the horizon. So lack of talent is not an excuse for going 3-9, or 7-6 anymore!

You need to develop that precious raw material. That's what GREAT coaches do! And the 2009 schedule is feeble by Notre Dame standards, it screams for 10+ wins. And with that many wins comes a probable BCS bowl invite?

And If that happens? Notre Dame needs to continue winning ways in bowl games. Started in Honolulu on Christmas eve. In short, anything less than that, and its Charlie's swansong in 2009!

In my 48 years of life. I've had the pleasure to watch four national title winners. 1966, 1973, 1977, and 1988. And I was spoiled to see coaches like Parseghian, Devine, and Holtz prowling the Irish sidelines! I yearn for those days again!

As I said earlier. I have my doubts about Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. But I continue to support him as our guy! If he learns and succeeds GREAT! If not, time for a change. I wanted Faust, Davie, and Willingham to do well to! It wasn`t meant to be. Now is the winter of our discontent. But hope springs eternal!
