NFL Draft 2012: 2nd-Rounders Worth the Risk
The 2012 NFL draft is full of players that will be more trouble than they're worth.
For whatever reason—whether that be past injuries, character concerns or perceived physical limitations—some players are branded as high-risk prospects.
Here are three second-rounders that are worth the risk.
Janoris Jenkins
Jenkins is undoubtedly one of the most talented players at any position in the entire draft. That being said, he comes with a whole lot of baggage that can't be overlooked.
Besides the fact that he's well on his way to challenging Antonio Cromartie for the most illegitimate children in the NFL (H/T Yahoo! Sports), Jenkins has a history of run-ins with the law.
Via Wikipedia: He was involved in a bar fight in 2009 which resulted in him getting shot by a police taser after resisting arrest. Jenkins was also busted three times for marijuana possession, forcing the Florida Gators to kick him out of the program, despite the fact that he was one of their biggest stars.
He ended up playing for North Alabama, a D-2 school that didn't mind his past behavior issues as long as he stayed out of trouble from then on.
Jenkins has seemingly stayed out of trouble since then, but the questions about his character still remain.
Thankfully for him, his smooth athletic abilities and ball-hawking skills will prompt a team to take a gamble at the top of the second round.
Jared Crick
If not for a torn pectoral injury that forced Crick out of his senior season, he was going to be a sure-fire first-round pick.
According to Chad Reuter of CBS Sports, size is more of an issue than the injury, but I'm not buying that for one second.
After all, at 6'4" and 285 pounds, Crick is exactly the same size as San Francisco 49ers defensive end Justin Smith, who is the best overall end in the NFL.
Either way you look at it, scouts have decided that Crick is somehow a risk, though I don't see that, either.
Crick is a perfect fit for a team that runs a 3-4 scheme. His strength, technique and leadership will be a boon to the team that is lucky enough to pick him.
Orson Charles
It wasn't that long ago that Charles was considered to be the best tight end prospect of the draft.
Then, in early March, Charles committed the ultimate sin: He was arrested for drunk driving.
This unfortunate fact, combined with Coby Fleener's incredibly strong showing at his pro day, sent Charles hurtling down draft boards faster than you can say "hurtle."
The thing that kills me is that Charles is still the same talented young man now that he was a month ago, yet I was recently criticized for taking him in the late third round in a recent mock draft.
Charles is going to be a steal for someone in the second round.
