2012 NFL Draft: Washington Redskins Plan Multiple Meetings with Andrew Luck

Jesse ReedApr 7, 2012

Andrew Luck to the Washington Redskins?

The Redskins aren't counting on Robert Griffin III to be the quarterback of the future just yet, if you believe the latest news.

Per Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the Redskins have confirmed they are setting up multiple on-campus meetings with Andrew Luck at Stanford.

Of course, you have to know they are just doing their due diligence here.

After all, we already know that Kyle Shanahan has met with Griffin in order to get a head start on teaching him the Redskins playbook (h/t Comcast SportsNet).

Even some Redskins players seem to want Griffin more than Luck.

Brian Orakpo spoke at a recent Nike event, per Yahoo! Sports:

"

"'I would love to get Griffin...It was all Andrew Luck but now the tide has turned...It all depends on what the Colts want to do. It just seems like Luck sits with the Colts organization and scheme better and it seems that RG3 sits with our scheme better.

"'That is because of the different offenses that we run, especially our offense. RG3 would fit perfectly with the bootleg action and all the different things we do. With the Colts and what they had with Payton [Manning] and the way they can just install Andrew Luck, they are going to get the same kind of guy. It seems more of a better fit all round.'"

"

Orakpo isn't alone in this perception, either.

Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post also believes Griffin III is a better fit for Mike Shanahan's offense. She lays out a good case for it, too, by examining the history of Mike's successes and failures with various quarterbacks he's had over the years.

The wild card here is Jim Irsay, the unpredictable owner of the Indianapolis Colts.

He recently invited Griffin to have a private workout—an offer Griffin's agent declined, according to Irsay.

Nobody knows what Irsay is going to do.

Therefore, the Redskins are smart to set up these meetings with Luck. They need to know how he might fit in their offense if Irsay decides to go off the rails and take RG3 first overall in the 2012 NFL draft. There is an off chance he will do it, even without a workout.

Still, I will be surprised if Luck ends up in Washington.

Stay tuned as we inch closer and closer to the day when all our questions will be answered.
