NHL Playoff Predictions 2012: Teams with Momentum to Shock the World

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

We all know who the favorites are in the National Hockey League, but several contenders have emerged from the bottom of the pile that could potentially make a run in the playoffs.

As they say, there's nothing like having a little bit of momentum heading into the postseason. It has a way of moving teams past their various flaws.

Here's a look at three teams with momentum on their side as we get set for the Stanley Cup playoffs.

3. Nashville Predators (Last 10: 6-4)

The Predators were struggling as recently as last Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks, but they've won their last two games, including against the Dallas Stars, and they have a goal difference of plus-22 this season.

It must be said that the Predators have a balanced team, with no clear weakness, and they have the best power-play percentage in the league. There is a chance they catch lightning in a bottle.

2. Phoenix Coyotes (Last 10: 6-2-2)

The Coyotes have won their last three games en route to clinching a playoff spot and their defense, complete with goalie Mike Smith, could make them dangerous.

In those three wins, the Coyotes have posted three shutouts, including against contender the San Jose Sharks. Defense has a way of catapulting you further than you could ever imagine in the postseason.

1. New Jersey Devils (Last 10: 6-3-1)

The Devils are red-hot heading into the playoffs. They've won their past five games after a rough stretch, including against the Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings, and they are playing solid defense.

The Devils have allowed one goal or fewer in four of their past five games, and won a shootout against the Blackhawks. They have the look of a contender ready to do some damage.
