United Beat Derby to Reach Carling Cup Final

Manchester United 4 - Derby 2 (Agg. 4-3) (League Cup, January 20, 2009)

It took just 16 minutes for United to equalise on aggregate at home to Derby, Nani produced a terrific strike from distance for the first goal of the night.

Five minutes later, the Red Devils took the lead overall through John O’Shea who had the freedom of Old Trafford to finish.

Ten minutes before the break, United all but booked their trip to Wembley as Carlos Tevez headed home from a Rafael cross. (First half chances here and here.)

With 10 minutes remaining, the Rams got a lifeline, Jonny Evans brought down Paul Green in the box and Giles Barnes tucked the spot-kick away.

United went on the offensive and added a fourth, Tevez was fouled in the box and Cristiano Ronaldo struck in the penalty.

But a frantic finish ended with Derby scoring a second, Giles Barnes curling home a wonderful 25-yard free-kick that gave Foster no chance.

Guingamp 2 - Brest 0 (AET) (Coupe De France, January 20, 2009) Richard Soumah broke the deadlock after 98 minutes with a low drive, and Badara Sene scored a comical second, charging down the keeper and seeing his block rebound in the unguarded net.

Feyenoord 0 - Heerenveen 3 (KNVB Beker, January 20, 2009) Heerenveen took the lead at Feyenoord when a ball over the top found Viktor Elm in acres of space and he took his time before slotting the ball calmly home. 

Elm, playing only his second match after his move from Kalmar, bagged his second in the 73rd minute to put the tie out of reach. Roy Beerens added the gloss with a third late on.

Venezuela 1 - Argentina 1 (U20 South American Championships, January 20, 2009) Venezuela, the hosts of the tournament, were awarded a penalty in the second minute, Salomon Rondon stepped up to the spot, and although his effort was saved by Luis Ojeda he scored the rebound. Argentina hit back in the 23rd minute with low shot into the far corner from Eduardo Salvio.

Peru 1 - Ecuador 2 (U20 South American Championships, January 20, 2009) Joao Rojas put Ecuador ahead early doors, heading home after three minutes.

Rojas doubled the lead with his second header of the match before Peru pulled a goal back six minutes later when Juan Jose Barros converted from the spot.
