WWE News: Mike Tyson Wants to Be a WWE Wrestler

Imaan JalaliApr 5, 2012

In terms of celebrity involvement in the WWE, Mike Tyson might be the most instrumental figure in the company's history.

His participation in the build-up to WrestleMania 14, where he acted as a ringside enforcer of the Shawn MIchaels vs. Steve Austin main event, helped turn the tide in the Monday night wars.

Rather than act like he's above the wrestling business, "Iron" MIke has always been gracious, humble and happy to be a part of the proceedings.

Whether that extends to hobnobbing with the WWE talent, taking part in WrestleMania Axxess festivities or being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, Tyson has always been a great sport.

Apparently, it's even more than that as Tyson's lifelong wrestling fandom, beginning with Bruno Sammartino, has compelled him to take his partnership with the WWE to the next level.

Believe it or not, Tyson, the boxing legend, wants to get back into the ring, this time as a wrestler (h/t 411Mania.com):

"

While being interviewed last month about his WWE Hall of Fame induction, Mike Tyson told Power Slam that he would be interested in competing in WWE. Tyson was asked if he still watches wrestling and said, 'I don't watch it as much as I used to—but it's not the same as it was; they don't have the same guys. But Triple H is coming back, the WWE is coming back, and I'd like to do whatever I can to be a part of that, to help them in any way I can. I would like to be a wrestler.'

"

If Tyson is truly serious about his interest in becoming a professional wrestler, that could only mean a windfall of good fortune for the WWE.

Tyson, even at 45 years old, would not only make the WWE more mainstream than it has ever been, but bring an air of legitimacy to Raw, SmackDown and pay-per-view.

Another important point is that, like the recently returned Brock Lesnar, Tyson was successful in carving a reputation for himself as a top-notch fighter.

By carrying over his accomplishments from boxing to wrestling, fans would easily buy him as a threat, regardless of how many holds he learns.

Not to mention, Tyson putting on the trunks again would open up a sea of marquee match possibilities.

At the top of that list is Lesnar vs. Tyson in a battle between the former boxing and UFC heavyweight champions.
