St. Louis Rams Free Agency: Potential STL WR Jerome Simpson Gets 15 Days in Jail

Shane GrayApr 5, 2012

According to a report from WKRC Cincinnati at local12.com, free-agent wide receiver Jerome Simpson (who worked out for the St. Louis Rams yesterday according to this report from Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch) was sentenced to 15 days in jail and three years of probation after a guilty plea to drug charges.

According to the above-linked article from WKRC Cincinnati, Simpson will report to begin his jail sentence tonight.

Simpson must now wait and see what type of additional punishment he might receive from the NFL. Potentially, he could face a league suspension of some magnitude.

With Simpson reportedly receiving a relatively light sentence as evidenced in the reports linked above, it would appear likely that he will see the football field for some team at some point this season.

The 26-year-old Simpson is 6'2" and 190 pounds, and he possesses superb athleticism, as evidenced here

He had something of a breakout season in 2011, pulling in 50 receptions for 725 yards and four touchdowns while averaging an impressive 14.5 yards per catch.

Simpson was a second-round draft choice of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2008 after playing at the collegiate level at Coastal Carolina University.

Once Danny Amendola signs his second-round restricted free-agent tender, the Rams current wide receiver corps will consist of Amendola, Steve Smith, Danario Alexander, Greg Salas, Austin Petttis, Brandon Gibson and special teams standout Dominique Curry.

As for Simpson, even if the Rams eventually sign the talented wideout, it would not likely preclude St. Louis from drafting a receiver (or two) in the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft.
