2012 NFL Draft: 5 Running Backs the Jacksonville Jaguars Could Pick from
We all know that one is going to replace Maurice Jones-Drew in the Jaguars' lineup.
But the idea of adding another running back to the stable of backs the Jaguars have may have crossed the minds of the Jaguars' brass in an effort to keep the NFL rushing champion fresh next season.
Could the Jaguars at some point find a speedster with size as a nice change-of-pace runner in the upcoming draft? There should be plenty to choose from in rounds two through four.
Jones-Drew has played with injuries before, having offseason knee surgery last year before the 2011 season. He responded with 1,606 yards on the ground and was second on the team in pass catches.
The Jaguars also know that Jones-Drew represented 46 percent of the team's offense. Keeping him healthy is vital to the team's success.
Here are five running backs who could be on the Jaguars' radar.
Bernard Pierce, Temple
1 of 5A nice runner with good size at 6'0" and 218 pounds.
He helped the Owls' offense on the ground and in the passing game.
Pierce has been clocked all over the board in the 40-yard dash, but he did crack the 4.4 time at least once.
A nice alternative to the smallish Jones-Drew.
Chris Rainey, Florida
2 of 5He is actually smaller in size to MJD at 5'8" and 180 pounds.
But coaches saw first hand at Florida's pro day just how fast Rainey was.
That speed could be beneficial not only in the running game on third down, but he can line up in the slot or help on return coverage.
Tauren Poole, Tennessee
3 of 5Poole was one of the bright spots in the Volunteers' offense.
He started all 13 games in 2010 as a junior and had his best season, recording a team-high 1,034 yards on 204 carries (5.1) and 11 touchdowns, adding 22 catches for 171 yards (7.8) and one touchdown, earning All-SEC Honorable Mention honors.
If he can catch the ball out of the backfield, it would give Blaine Gabbert another weapon to use in the offense.
Terrance Ganaway, Baylor
4 of 5At 6'0" and 239 pounds, he is a bigger bowling ball than MJD.
Ganaway may have been overlooked in the Bears' offense because Robert Griffin III and Kendall Wright got most of the accolades.
But with his size, many teams will be hard-pressed to ignore him and his ability.
Adonis Thomas, Toledo
5 of 5Another "smaller" back at 5'10" and 185 pounds who can catch and return kicks.
Thomas is a shifty, coordinated athlete with explosive burst to create on his own lanes, and he contribute as a receiver.
He is a balanced runner with good combination of wiggle and lower body strength. He possesses above-average initial burst with natural explosion and start/stop ability to make guys miss.
