Tim Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez: Breaking Down the Jets' QB Battle

Andrea HangstApr 4, 2012

Right now, Mark Sanchez is the starting quarterback for the New York Jets and Tim Tebow is his backup. However, a competition could be brewing, considering what we saw happen in Denver last season.

Upon adding Tebow to the roster, the Jets’ top brass made it clear that Sanchez would remain their No. 1 passer, and the contract extension he received prior to Tebow coming aboard seems to solidify it.

Head coach Rex Ryan made it clear that while Tebow is a good football player, Sanchez is the good quarterback, adding that Tebow could play up to 20 snaps per game in the Wildcat formation, in spread packages, on goal-line plays and could even protect the punter on special teams.

However, Tebow’s former teammate Champ Bailey said Tebow’s after the starting job, and he may well take it.

Though Tebow’s passing numbers last season weren’t spectacular—a 46.5 completion percentage, just 1,729 passing yards and six interceptions to 12 scores—neither were Sanchez’s. He completed just 56.7 percent of his passes, for 3,474 yards, 26 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

With Tebow in town, Sanchez’s struggles aren’t going to be suffered by the Jets fans for long. Unless Sanchez finally benefits from a quarterback who could force him to step up his game, it might be inevitable that Tebow becomes the starter at some point this season.
