It was the shot heard round the world. The return of WWE chairman Vince McMahon ended in tragedy as Raw's top star erupted on national television and did the unthinkable.
The screenshot featured above tells the entire story. Vincent Kennedy McMahon lying motionless in the middle of the ring with The Legend Killer standing above him in utter disbelief of what had just happened.
The events of this insane episode of Monday Night Raw culminated with the blow that will perhaps forever changed the future of Randy Orton.
The night began with Orton winning a six-man over-the-top rope challenge. The leader of the Legacy looked to be in top form as both Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase insured that the Legend Killer walk away victorious.
The night could have ended positive for Orton. He had the opportunity to walk out of Raw with the major momentum needed to propel him to victory in this Sunday night's Royal Rumble match.
It was just moments later backstage that Cody Rhodes reported to Orton, the rumor that Stephanie McMahon was going to fire him for what he and the Legacy did to Manu and Sim Snuka last week.
Orton decided to confront Stephanie McMahon directly.
After attempting to get on her good side, she called him out for blatantly sucking up which only infuriated Orton and led him to go on a verbal tirade insulting the Billion Dollar Princess. Stephanie slapped Randy Orton which later set the stage for the events that would follow.
After Chris Jericho was humiliated and forced to beg for his job back, an infuriated Randy Orton came to the ring as Jericho left in humiliation. He demanded that Stephanie apologize to him and went as far as to further insult her when she refused. Vince told Stephanie to leave the ring.
He then demanded that Randy Orton apologize to him personally. When it looked as if Orton was unlikely to do so, Vince McMahon threatened him to do so "or else". When Randy Orton called Vince McMahon out claiming that he "does not want to do that", Vince began to utter the last two words Orton wanted to here.
And in mid sentence, Orton slapped Vince McMahon right in the face. As the chairman began to fall, Orton followed up by pushing his head down with his foot. As Vince McMahon fell to his knees, The Viper cocked back and punted the consciousness right out of Mr. McMahon.
Immediately you could tell that Orton could not believe what he had done. For this first time in his career, I actually saw a mix of either remorse or second thoughts on Orton's behalf as he stood in disbelief, holding his head in shock.
Medical personal rushed to the ring, as did a heartbroken Stephanie McMahon who laid by her father's side crying in devastation.
Never before have I seen the likes of this happen to Vince McMahon. He has been on the end of countless "Stone Cold Stunners", but nothing ever possessed the violent and tragic flavor in the manor that this attack did.
I have no earthly idea what is in store for Randy Orton. This entire storyline defies the traditional conventions of WWE storytelling. Vince McMahon will always be viewed as a tweener at best (if not a heel) so seeing Raw's top heel do this is unlike anything WWE fans have ever seen.
Randy Orton is in line for a push all right, I just have no idea where they're pushing him.
