2012 NFL Draft: 5 Quarterbacks the Jaguars May Look to Bring in
The Jaguars tried to make a splash by trading for Tim Tebow. The Jets now have the NFL's most popular player.
The Jags signed Chad Henne prior to that, hoping the former Dolphin would compete with starter Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert will be behind center when the team starts the season.
But as the draft approaches, it is possible that new head coach Mike Mularkey could add a quarterback in the later rounds or sign one afterward to the practice squad.
While there is plenty of talent in the first few rounds of the draft where teams can find a "gem," the later rounds will be where some teams can find players to challenge incumbents and fill out practice squad rosters.
Here is a look at some passers the team may look at.
John Brantley, Florida
1 of 5He had a disastrous year (actually career) at Florida.
Can he still make it in the pros?
New coach Mike Mularkey saw Brantley work out at Florida's Pro Day. He is still a kid with a good arm who was never coached properly in the college game. From Urban Meyer to Charlie Weis (Florida's offensive coordinator), he never got it going.
He should be a late (seventh) round pick or free agent who could be the third quarterback or a practice squad-type.
Jacory Harris, Miami
2 of 5Four years ago, he looked like the next great thing in college football.
Then he tailed off. But the size and athleticism is still there, and he could still be a serviceable quarterback in the NFL. He isn't Cam Newton and he isn't RGIII. But he still can play the game.
Holding a clipboard still pays pretty good these days.
Ryan Lindley, San Diego State
3 of 5I am not sold on Lindley being an upper echelon passer in this draft, but he could be a steal for someone in the later rounds.
At 6'4" and 230 pounds, he is the right size and height for the job, He can look over defenses and move around in the pocket. He did struggle with his completion percentage last season, but that also has to do with the players around him.
He would make a nice backup while he learned the game for a year or two.
Aaron Corp, Richmond
4 of 5Every year you get a player or quarterback teams fall in love with in the later round.
Corp may be this year's player.
At 6'4" and 215, he is tall and lean. He is about the same size as Ryan Tannehill without as much talent. Players like Corp have a tendency to grow into the game and become good scout team players.
He would be a nice addition to the practice squad.
Josh McGregor, Jacksonville
5 of 5He is a personal favorite of mine. He makes the list because I saw him play continually at Jacksonville University.
But I also think he can play at this level.
At 6'2" and 205 pounds, McGregor reminds me of David Garrard with a good arm. He played against adequate talent in college, but nothing to write home about.
Still, he is a hometown talent who should get some attention in the draft or as a free agent.
