Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) Joins Twitter, the NFL & Social Media Worlds Collide
Robert Griffin III has taken a major step in his life, and it doesn’t involve the upcoming NFL draft.
Rather, Griffin has joined the world of Twitter.
You can check him out here: @RGIII. (Side note: I’m shocked nobody had previously claimed that handle.)
It’s unclear what to expect from the future NFL star via the social networking tool, as some athletes take to Twitter as a casual hobby, while others—like Chad Ochocinco and LeBron James—use it as a platform to consistently connect with their fans.
What also ought to be interesting is how rapidly Griffin’s following grows. At last check, he was closing in on 8,000 followers (let’s hope he’s turned off the setting that forwards an email to his smartphone every time he gains a new follower). By the time you read this piece, that number may have doubled, tripled or even increased tenfold.
Athletes are amongst the most popular “Tweeters” out there, with Ochocinco totaling nearly 3.4 million followers. Should Griffin’s pro career mirror his senior season at Baylor, it’s likely he’ll evolve into the most popular NFLers around, not just in Washington, DC (where he’ll likely end up in the draft).
No word yet on whether former Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will follow Griffin’s lead, but we can report that he’ll have to get creative when deciding his handle should he choose to do so, because @AndrewLuck is already taken.
The power of social media continues to shine through, and RGIII—sorry, @RGIII—is ready to capitalize.
P.S. I want to eclipse 8,000 followers one day too. Follow me on Twitter: @FieldYates
