NFL Rumors: Why RGIII Was Right to Turn Down Colts Private Workout
A day after it was reported that the Indianapolis Colts were considering Robert Griffin III over Andrew Luck, the agent of the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner has apparently turned down a private workout with the team that holds the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
The somewhat surprising news that Griffin III's agent said no to the Indianapolis' workout request came straight from the Twitter of Colts' owner Jim Irsay.
Huh?
Doesn't make sense, does it?
Actually, I get what's going on here.
To begin, the rumor came from Mike Wilbon, a respected sports journalist, who cited sources close to the Colts organization.
Sure, the Colts are considering Robert Griffin III, as they should be. He's a magnificent quarterback prospect, a guy with many franchise signal-caller traits and on-field attributes.
Were they necessarily considering RGIII over Luck? I'm not so sure.
Any reported Griffin III consideration after several months with Luck penciled in as the Colts' first pick was bound to be overblown and taken more seriously by the media and fans than it really was by the Colts organization.
There are many top NFL insiders and reporters who still firmly believe Luck to the Colts is a lock, and there's a great chance Griffin III and his agent understand that formality, as well.
So why should Griffin III waste his time with a team that is probably just working him out as somewhat of a media stunt to "prove" they're completing their due diligence?
If he and his agent truly believed the Colts were seriously considering him, he'd be throwing passes for Jim Irsay and Chuck Pagano right now. (Actually, hasn't every team seen enough? Game tape, the combine and his pro day? Come on.)
With the new CBA, the difference in money between the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks isn't tremendous, so Griffin III and his agent won't be losing out on a considerable amount of money, anyway.
Secondly, the Baylor icon met with the Redskins' brass last month when they all were in attendance for his up-tempo pro day in Waco, Texas.
RGIII also was in Redskins' country over the weekend to sign autographs at a sports memorabilia show.
Think he could be warming to the idea of landing in the nation's capital and throwing to Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss and Jabar Gaffney, while playing in the supremely media-hyped NFC East?
I do.
So while Griffin III would probably like to be the No. 1 overall pick, there's a distinct possibility that he's come to terms with Luck being selected first.
Being picked No. 2 overall isn't exactly the worst consolation prize.
