WWE Storyline of the Week: Brock Lesnar Returns and Hits John Cena with an F5

Drake OzJun 5, 2018

Last night’s episode of Monday Night Raw was a show for the ages, one that wrestling fans will be talking about for years.

That was due to a number of factors, such as the raucous Miami crowd, an appearance by The Rock, the return of Alberto Del Rio and so on and so forth.

But the best thing about this week’s Raw? The return of Brock Lesnar.

If there’s anything that wrestling fans like to see, it’s a major name returning to the company that made him a star. And that’s exactly what happened last night.

As John Cena cut a promo in the ring about his loss to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, the Miami crowd (which seemed to be full of Internet fans) started a really loud “We want Lesnar!” chant. It was Lesnar that they wanted, and Lesnar that they got.

“The Next Big Thing” emerged from backstage to a thunderous ovation from the crowd, took a while to soak everything in, made his way to the ring, went to shake Cena’s hand and then nailed Cena with a huge F5 that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

It was just the type of ending to Raw that made an already fantastic show even better.

Say what you want about Vince McMahon, but it wasn’t long ago that Lesnar retired from UFC, and it took just a few months for McMahon to bring him back to the WWE. Vince wanted Lesnar to return to his company, and the business mastermind pulled it off.

There has been all sorts of speculation about what the WWE was going to do after WrestleMania 28. The Undertaker, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and The Rock would be gone, and the company needed to fill that gaping hole that was left by the departure of those four legends.

They filled it, and they did so with one of the biggest names in sports: Brock Lesnar.

It’s very easy for interest in the WWE product to peak at WrestleMania 28 and then fall off dramatically afterward, but thanks to Lesnar’s return, that isn’t going to happen.

If anything, interest in the WWE is peaking, and I have to commend Vince for shaking things up and bringing in a guy who has a ton of appeal in the world of combat sports.

Although the live crowd knew that Lesnar’s return was coming and many of us watching at home did as well, that doesn’t change the fact that Lesnar is back or that the WWE just got a lot more interesting.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
