Robert Griffin III Declines Colts' Private Workout Invitation
Robert Griffin III appears to have ended all debate on the No. 1 overall pick—at least, in the sense that he may not want to be one at all.
The Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback has reportedly declined the opportunity to work out with the Indianapolis Colts, something Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is doing today.
Colts owner Jim Irsay tweeted:
"A Luck private workout 2day..we want 2b as thorough n disciplined n process of #1 pick..we wanted 2do private with RG3,but his agent said no
— Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) April 3, 2012"
The key word in Irsay's tweet was "agent," but let's be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the fact that if RGIII wanted to work out for the Colts, he would.
ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio surmises that the reason for the denial could be a number of things, ranging from RGIII not wanting to fill Peyton's shoes to simply wanting to play for the Redskins rather than the Colts.
Whatever the reason, RGIII is making it clear that playing in Indianapolis is something that does not interest him.
Ironically, he said the opposite when talking with coach Jon Gruden on the ESPN special Gruden's QB Camp:
RGIII claims that he doesn't want to "yield" the No. 1 pick to Luck, but he believes there are "two No. 1 overall picks this year," and that the Redskins wouldn't have traded up to No. 2 for a guy they "wouldn't take at No. 1."
So again, whatever the reasoning, RGIII is making it known that the Redskins, not the Colts, are the team he wants to play for in the NFL next season. In his eyes, going No. 2 doesn't make him No. 2 overall; it actually makes him the second No. 1 pick.
The power play is one we've seen from No. 1 overall picks in the past, but they were still the No. 1 overall pick and got their money's worth. RGIII seems to be shying away from the prospect of going No. 1 overall, because money doesn't matter, but the team he wants to play for does.
More will certainly be made of this in the coming days.
