Why Drafting Robert Griffin III Would Ruin the Indianapolis Colts
If the Indianapolis Colts decide to select Robert Griffin III with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft, it will be disastrous for their franchise.
Griffin is a fine player and a good kid, but if the Colts were to pass on Andrew Luck the franchise might never recover. Luck is quite simply the best quarterback I have ever scouted. He has all the tools to be a superstar and he is as polished as they come under center. While Griffin may end up being a fine NFL quarterback, Indianapolis needs to draft Luck.
The Baylor quarterback had an outstanding 2011 season during which he took home the Heisman Trophy. In addition to that, he has been better than advertised throughout the draft evaluation period. He had a great showing at the combine and dominated his pro day.
I don't think Griffin could have done any more to prove himself, but Luck is just simply the guy the Colts have to take. It is a no-brainer.
Luck would have been the No. 1 pick in last year's draft and he was the best player in college football all season. This is the kind of pick that has set up perfectly for the team making it. The Colts need a quarterback to build around as they hit the reset button on their roster. Luck can come in immediately and be that guy.
If Indianapolis were to somehow reverse course and take Griffin, the backlash would be so immense that the young quarterback may never be able to dig out from underneath it. He will end up being compared to Luck in the future anyway, but if he became the top pick it would be questioned for the rest of his career.
If the Colts take Luck, no one will question the pick. He is the guy who should go No. 1, and on the slim chance that he doesn't become a superstar, no one will question whether or not Indianapolis made the right decision.
If the Colts were to select Griffin, the endless questioning of the pick and the comparisons to how Luck was doing could bury him and the franchise in one big avalanche of negativity.
Indianapolis needs to not over-think this pick and just take Luck. He's the best player available and gives the team the best chance to rebuild long-term.
