Trumaine Johnson to Rams: Video Highlights, Scouting Report and Analysis
This University of Montana prospect has received as much hype as any Big Sky Conference player ever has. Trumaine Johnson started all four years for the Grizzlies and picked off 15 passes in that time, along with numerous pass deflections.
Johnson possesses the size (6'2", 204) NFL teams drool over at the cornerback position. Last season's Pro Bowl roster included players like Charles Woodson, Brandon Browner, Charles Tillman and Champ Bailey, who were all six-feet plus.
As a former wide receiver, it is no surprise that Johnson can make a play on the ball and get a grip on his fair share of errant passes thrown his way. However, despite all of his physical attributes, there are still major concerns from scouts' perspectives.
According to Chad Reuter over at CBS Sports, Johnson displays the following strengths and weaknesses in coverage:
"Possesses strong hands of former receiver. Makes the easy interception on underthrows or when quarterbacks stare down his man, high-points passes with height and vertical.
Quicker receivers can accelerate past him when near the line, needs to maintain contact to prevent separation. Needs work on using his hands in press coverage, plays mostly off and press-bail to prevent big plays.
"
Overall the scouts' take on Johnson is this according to NFLDraftScout.com:
"He seems smooth and instinctive on defense, especially when going for the ball. His size and overall athleticism are impressive, but scouts question whether he has the quickness to compete with NFL receivers.
"
Johnson has all of the tools and physical capabilities to become an impact cornerback in the NFL. He likely won't be able to start right away, but with the right coaching and an opportunity to slowly gain valuable experience covering NFL receivers, he will blossom quickly.
Pick Analysis
Johnson profiles as a bit of project in the NFL. He's unlikely to step right in for the St. Louis Rams and contribute immediately, but the converted wide receiver has elite cornerback size and demonstrates good instincts on the defensive side of the ball. Concerns about his quickness and ability to thrive in press coverage must be addressed, however, for the Montana product to excel at the next level.
