Nike NFL Jerseys: Early Peeks at Potential Uniforms Show Nike Won't Go Overboard

Ryan RudnanskyApr 2, 2012

By all indications, traditionalists won't be that displeased with Nike's new NFL uniforms when they are unveiled on Tuesday. Early looks at the potential logos and jerseys of several NFL teams show that Nike doesn't want to rock the boat too much.

ESPN gave some early glimpses of the potential future looks of the Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks on Monday, and let's just say there weren't a great deal of changes (looking at the old and new Seahawks logos is like playing a game of Spot the Difference).

It appears as if Nike doesn't want to rattle NFL Nation too much. It could have been bold, creating uniforms we either love or hate. But it seems like Nike will go the safe route, and, honestly, I think it's the right choice.

We've seen alternate jerseys throughout the years. Most of them are, frankly, awful. For franchises deep-rooted in tradition, changing their jerseys drastically would probably inspire riots in some cities. Imagine the Pittsburgh Steelers' uniforms changing. I would not want to be in the city of Pittsburgh if that happened.

But who knows, maybe Nike will mix it up a little bit. If the NFL's new uniform supplier decides to make some drastic changes, the smart thing would be to keep the historic jerseys and change up the uniforms that have invoked criticisms throughout the years. The Seahawks come to mind for me (we have yet to see what their jerseys will look like).

My thoughts? I think Nike should change up the jerseys every year, rewarding the winning teams with the ability to choose their jerseys and punishing the bottom-feeders of the league. It could be like a scale system: The worse your record, the worse your jerseys. That way, teams wouldn't tank for the No. 1 overall pick knowing that the No. 1 pick wouldn't don their uniforms under any conditions whatsoever.

But, in all seriousness, Nike's apparent stance to merely polish off the rough edges of NFL uniforms is the right one to take, and it adds a little intrigue without going overboard.
